About BCA
The Burton Caribbean Association (BCA) is a registered charity and community-led organisation that owns and operates a community centre in Burton upon Trent, serving an area of significant social and economic deprivation. Managed by a voluntary Board of Trustees, the organisation operates as both a charity and a company limited by guarantee.
Established in 1973, the Association was created to improve social and economic opportunities for Black Afro-Caribbean residents in East Staffordshire. In its early years, meetings were held in members’ homes and rented spaces until, through the efforts of late Mr Verrol Carruthers and 12 founding members, sufficient funds were raised to purchase 346 Uxbridge Street, which became the permanent home of the BCA and a base for educational, cultural and community activities.
Officially opened in 1990, the Centre developed into a local hub for information, support and community engagement. Today, the BCA continues to build on this legacy by offering inclusive activities, educational programmes and social opportunities for people from all backgrounds, supporting both community wellbeing and greater social inclusion.
